Participating in the DEFI WING, one of the most thrilling long-distance wingfoil races in the world, requires meticulous preparation. Held in the picturesque town of Gruissan, South of France, the race is famous for its intense Tramontana winds, which can range from 20 to 60 knots. To ensure you’re fully equipped to face the challenge, here’s a comprehensive packing list that covers everything you’ll need for a successful and enjoyable DEFI WING experience.

Gear Preparation

Boards

  • 1 WingFoil Board: Choose a small board on which you feel comfortable and controlled.

Wings

  • A quiver of a few wings, to ensure you are well powered, bring wings ranging from 3.0 to 5.0.
If the winds are lighter, make sure to bring your biggest wings. And remember, it is better to be overpowered than to be underpowered.

Foils

  • Foil and Spare Components: Ensure you have a backup for crucial foil parts.
  • Foil size: bring your smallest foil to ensure maximum speeds.
  • Stabilizer: bring a small stabilizer to minimize drag, but not too small because you do not want to lose control.
  • Fuselage: Choose a long fuselage, to account for the loss of stability of your smaller stabilizer you want a long fuselage. On the long reaches this will give you a steady flight.

Components

  • Booms/ handles: Make sure not to forget any handles of your wings.
  • Leashes: you do not want to leave the beach without a leash, with gusting offshore winds the chance of losing your board or wing is significant without a leash.
  • Pump: however there are plenty of riders, you want to make sure you do not have to lend a pump in case you miss an adapter.
  • Footstraps: with the high winds and speeds you want to have a pair of footstraps. If you don’t feel comfortable using the backstrap, use only the front straps. Sometimes a small hop is required to get seaweed off your foil, footstraps will make this loads easier.

Accessories

  • Starting Watch: For precise race timing.
  • Sport Watch: To monitor your performance and conditions.
  • Harness: A comfortable harness is crucial for long races. (remember; one reach is 10/20 KM :-))
  • Adjustable Harness Lines: Long lines that can be adjusted on the go for maximum comfort and control.

Repair Kit

  • Sanding Paper: For quick fixes to your board or gear.
  • Fast Repair Kit (e.g. Ding Stick): For emergency repairs.
  • Aluminum Tape: Useful for temporary fixes.
  • Screws and Tools: Include a screwdriver, Phillips head, Torx, and scissors for on-the-spot adjustments.

Neoprene & Sun Protection

  • Winter and Spring Wetsuits: The weather can be unpredictable, so bring wetsuits for both cooler and warmer conditions.
  • Shoes/Boots: Even if you usually windsurf barefoot, pack shoes to prevent blisters from long sessions.
  • Poncho: For changing on the beach.
  • Sun Cream: High SPF to protect against prolonged sun exposure.
  • Hat/Cap: To shield your face from the sun when not on the water.

  • Helmet: Mandatory for foilers, but recommended for all participants.
  • Impact Vest: Ideally, choose one with an integrated pocket. The Prolimit race vest and WIP ones are highly recommended.
