Constant exposure to the sun, wind or cold air during your windsurf/wingfoil sessions can leave your hands dry, chapped and sometimes even sore. That's where neoprene gloves come in quite handy. There are multiple styles of neoprene gloves/mittens so everyone finds what best suits them. So how can you find the perfect neoprene gloves?
When it comes to the style of neoprene gloves there are 5 types:
Mittens: The warmest type of gloves as your fingers are wrapped together but still separated from the thumb. It helps to retain heat in the hands however the movement is severely limited. To improve this problem you can opt for mittens with an open palm. The exposed part of your palm provides you with a better grip of the boom or handles while still keeping your fingers warm and protected from the outside elements.
Lobster gloves: 3-finger gloves, provides you with the freedom for thumb and index finger while keeping the rest of your fingers wrapped together. This design allows for a bit more control than a mitten. One thing to keep in mind is that sizing can be a bit more difficult with the three-finger style, so it is essential to get your measurements right.
Standard 5-finger gloves: The classic style of gloves that provides your hands with greater freedom of movement which is especially useful when handling your gear.
Hybrid gloves: The combination of standard 5-finger gloves with a mitten-like cover that protects your hands from wind chills while offering direct feeling of the boom or handles. Riders can choose to either pull the neoprene cover over their freezing fingers or simply leave it in the compartment.
Short Finger gloves: Designed to be lightweight, breathable, and comfortable, making them suitable for use in warmer weather conditions without causing overheating or discomfort. The shortfinger gloves typically feature materials on the palms and fingers that enhance grip while keeping your hands protected from sun exposure and blisters.
As with every neoprene product, neoprene thickness plays an important role when choosing the right pair of gloves.
1.5mm-2mm: Ideal for temperature around 15° or if you want to protect your hands from UV exposure.
3mm-4mm: During early spring and autumn sessions you might need more insolation for your hands from the outside weather elements.
5mm<: Protection for your hands in cold winter sessions with freezing temperatures.
